Hope for a national palliative care strategy in Nepal

Kathmandu, Nepal, May 2012 -- Two Worlds Cancer Collaboration and the International Union for Cancer Control (UICC) sponsored a two- day workshop that held in Kathmandu, April 7-8, 2012. The workshop  “Expanding Palliative Care in Nepal” was hosted by the Nepal Association of Palliative Care (NAPCare) and Nepal Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (NNCTR). Representatives from across Nepal took part in formal and informal discussions with an international faculty. Highlights from the meeting includED a commitment to produce a palliative care strategy that will be presented to the government through NAPCare.  Nepal Health Secretary Dr. Mishara, who was in attendance, said that he looked forward to receiving this and would strive to incorporate the strategy into the National Health Care Plan for Nepal.

Two Worlds' program update:  Residual funds from the workshop were provided to NNCTR to support on-going project work. Dr. Robin Love and colleagues provided  in-depth training with the Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital near Kathmandu (Nanaimo Hospice twinning partner) and Drs. Love, Fraser Black and team members also visited the B. P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital in Bharatpur, Nepal (Victoria Hospice twinning partner)
